  • Galactooligosaccharides(GOS) is defined as the portion of the formulation that consists of the total of the non-lactose disaccharides plus trisaccharides, tetrasaccharides, and trace amounts of higher oligosaccharides.
  • Galactooligosaccharides(GOS) is an inclusive term referring to oligosaccharides with 2 to 6 sugars that have galactose as their main component and are generated by the action of β-galactosidase upon lactose.
  • The main component of GOS is 4’-galactosyl-lactose(4’-GL), which consists of 1-galactose bonded to lactose. 4’-GL is known to exist in mother’s milk. Other constituents of the product are oligosaccharides composed of 4 to 5 monosaccharides in which several galactoses are bonded to lactose, and a disaccharide in which galactose and glucose are united by β-1, 3 and β -1, 6 bonds (transgalactosylated disaccharide).

Characteristics of galactooligosaccharides

  1. Growth promotion of intestinal bifidobacteria
Consuming 2.5g of GOS / day can significantly increase the population of intestinal bifidobacteria.
  2. Non-digestibility
GOS was not digested but reached the large intestine, where it was utilized by the intestinal bacteria.
  3. Improves regularity&Increase stool frequency
  4. Non-cariogenicity
GOS is scarcely assimilated at all by oral bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans.
  5. Promotion of Mineral Absorption

Physical properties of galactooligosaccharides

  • GOS is stable against heating and low pH.
  • A refined sweetness with no unusual qualities.
  • GOS has the effect of retaining an appropriate degree of wettability.
